Do you have a taste for films and television shows that serve up tales of suspense with a dose of the supernatural? If so, then read on for info on a new web series that you might want to check out. Recently, a friend recommended that I watch The Third, a web series produced, written, and directed by New York filmmaker, Emon Hassan. After watching all of the chapters in the series (which totals about forty minutes as of May 14, 2012) I can say that I'm officially a fan.

What does the title mean and what's the series about, you ask? Well, the complete answer will be revealed gradually over time, but Hassan says the series' main character is simply known as "The Third", and his mission is to "...make sure no one escapes their fate." Hassan also describes his series as one dealing with "...past lives, portals, and the time-space continuum."

As I said, I've watched every chapter (which run about four to six minutes each) and a few things about the The Third struck me immediately.
  • The overall quality is very high. It's obvious that a tremendous amount of thought and  preparation went into the production. The series maintains an eerie tone throughout, and it's expertly filmed using interesting locations around Manhattan.
  • The cast consists of professional actors who have appeared in feature films and on television, including Philip Willingham in the title role.
  • In several chapters there is minimal dialogue, which was perplexing initially. Very little is divulged about the main character's background. However, hints are there for those who watch carefully. Don't expect your questions to be answered quickly - just allow the story to unfold.
I was fascinated by the strange, supernatural elements of The Third, so I asked Hassan what inspired him to create the series. Here's part of his reply -
The inspiration for The Third comes from my love of New York and its history... I’m particularly fond of Manhattan because being a resident of the island I have always felt the collective stories of its residents & visitors over the centuries are somehow connected whether the “participants” knew it or not. It’s something I fantasize about... While The Third is a supernatural/mystery series, NY history buffs will be glad to know that a lot of what happens on the show is inspired by actual events, places, and people that have lived, or stayed, or influenced the island. - Emon Hassan

The Houses of 'Game of Thrones' - Art That Would Make Westeros Proud

House Tarth

Whether you're a long-time fan of A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin, or (like me) have just recently become addicted to the HBO series based on Martin's novels, these posters are for you. Created by graphic artist, Thomas Gateley, these minimalist posters portray each of the Houses' symbol (also known as a sigil) using striking iconic images. This is only a sample of Gateleys work. Ridley Scott's Prometheus Inspires Ultra-cool Fan Art

Prometheus-Movie-Poster-by-PJ-McQuade-1

It's a toss-up as to which upcoming movie is doing more to inspire artists to create fan art posters and other images. I thought The Dark Knight Rises had the most fan-created homages on the internet, but lately Ridley Scott's Prometheus is showing up more on artists' websites such as deviantART and flickr. For example, the image above is by professional artist, Patrick McQuade, who has more Prometheus sketches on his blog

"Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe. The movie takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life's ultimate mystery."

New Viral Posters for Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus'

Unless you've been in a coma for the last year or so, you know Prometheus is one of the most anticipated movies of 2012. Directed by Ridley Scott, the film takes place in the same cinematic universe as Scott's 1978 science fiction classic, Alien. The film's title refers to the spaceship that takes its crew on a mission to discover the origins of human life.

This week, a series of posters appeared online as part of the Prometheus marketing campaign. Pictured above is David (portrayed by Michael Fassbender), an android who serves as the ship's butler and maintenance man.

Graffiti Artist Blek le Rat Has Major London Show

Xtraneus
Blek le Rat, a Parisian-born artist, has often been called the "father" of stencilled street art. He's been cited as a major influence on the more well known, Banksy, who's gained a world-wide following using techniques that le Rat pioneered.

Xtraneus
Le Rat, whose real name is Xavier Prou, started stencilling rats on buildings around Paris in 1981. He referred to the rat as "the only free animal in the city" and one which "spreads the plague everywhere, just like street art".

Xtraneus
If you're like me, the work of this important artist might've slipped under your radar, in favor of other more well-hyped street artists. Fortunately, le Rat will have an exhibition of his work at a London gallery and more people will appreciate his influence on the street art movement. If you're in London between April 27 and May 18, 2012, visit the Opera Gallery at 134 New Bond St.

Xtraneus
Here's how le Rat describes his beginnings -

.1981 to 1983 the beginning of the stencil graffiti art .I had the idea to use stencils to make graffiti for one reason. I did not want to imitate the American graffiti that I had seen in NYC in 1971 during a journey I had done over there.I wanted to have my own style in the street… I began to spray some small rats in the streets of Paris because rats are the only wild living animals in cities and only rats will survive when the human race will have disappeared and died out.

'The Dark Knight Rises' on the Cover of Entertainment Weekly

Media_httpimg23timein_vjfqe

The summer movie season is about to begin and definitely one of the most anticipated flicks is The Dark Knight Rises. Fans have been talking about Christopher Nolan's third and final Batman film for years, and now we're only about three months away from opening day - July 20. Entertainment Weekly has published its Summer Movie Preview, and Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway grace the cover.

The issue is packed with info on TDKR. Check out the quote below from Hathaway, who plays Selina Kyle/Catwoman.

“I had to physically transform,” says Hathaway, calling from London, where she’s currently shooting Les Misérables with Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe. “Chris sat me down at the beginning and said, ‘Joseph Gordon-Levitt did all of his own fighting in Inception. That one zero-gravity fight? He trained for two months.’ I basically left his office and went to the gym and just came out about five minutes ago.”

New Rolling Stones Studio Album Might Be on the Way

Media_https1reutersme_dibel

Can you believe it? The Rolling Stones are making plans to celebrate their fiftieth year in music! According to this great article on Ron Wood, who's been guitarist for the Stones since 1975, the guys have lots of plans for 2012 and 2013. In 2012, they're going to jam in the studio for the first time in a few years and a record might follow. The group is also working on a documentary about their fifty years together, and a tour might happen in 2013. The band hasn't released a studio album since 2005.

The article is mainly about Wood's long and successful visual arts career, which was interesting because I didn't realize Wood was originally an artist. I had seen some of his paintings in magazines, but i didn't realize that art was his first love. Wood says in the piece that he began drawing at age seven and eventually enrolled in Ealing Art College in London.

As well known as he is for playing guitar, Wood also has earned accolades for his art work from critics such as Brian Sewell and artists Damien Hirst and Lucian Freud. Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber commissioned work from him and former U.S. President Bill Clinton owns a couple of his canvases as well.- Reuters
I remember buying a copy of Let It Bleed at a used record store when I was thirteen and being blown away by the mix of country, blues, and straight ahead rock. Ever since then, I've been a die-hard fan. What was your first Stones album?
